Why It Matters
The only skyscraper for miles in Wicker Park, and a serious design achievement: two completely different historic buildings (a 1929 Art Deco tower and a 1905 fireproof warehouse) merged into one coherent hotel. Member of Design Hotels and Marriott Bonvoy eligible. The Up Room rooftop bar on the 13th floor has some of the best skyline views in the city outside of downtown.
The Robey lives inside one of Wicker Park's most dramatic buildings — the 1929 Art Deco Northwest Tower, a 203-foot triangular skyscraper that looms over the six-way intersection of Damen, Milwaukee, and North Avenues. Grupo Habita, the Mexican boutique hotel group, brought in Belgian duo Nicolas Schuybroek Architects and Marc Merckx Interiors to carve 89 rooms out of what was originally office space, layering in hardwood floors, Waterworks bath fixtures, Calcutta marble tabletops, and walls of glass against the building's raw bones. The result is a genuinely cool hotel in a genuinely cool neighborhood — but fair warning: the smallest rooms clock in at just 235 square feet, and there's no on-site full-service spa.
