The complimentary Saturday hotel history and art tour (11am from the concierge desk) is genuinely excellent and free for overnight guests

Why It Matters

One of San Diego's oldest continually operating hotels. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Grant Grill has held AAA/CAA Four Diamond status and has been running since 1951. The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation — whose ancestors originally owned the land — purchased and restored the building in 2003–2006, a genuinely unusual ownership story that shapes the hotel's art and cultural programming.

Built by Ulysses S. Grant Jr. and opened in 1910, this is one of San Diego's great civic monuments. It's a Beaux Arts castle — soaring ceilings, marble floors, crystal chandeliers, ornate ironwork — that has hosted 13 US presidents, Albert Einstein, and Charles Lindbergh. Now owned by the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation and operated as part of Marriott's Luxury Collection, it carries a $6.5 million art collection across 11 floors and 270 rooms. The Grant doesn't try to compete with newer boutique properties; it simply operates on a different plane.
