Thingholt
Minimalist Icelandic design — dark leather, concrete accents, cowhide rugs, moody pendant lights. Intimate and cosmopolitan without being fussy. The kind of boutique where the lobby doubles as a bar.
Junior Suites and Loft Suites include complimentary spa access — worth the upgrade if you plan to use it.
Why It Matters
Designed by celebrated Icelandic architect Gulla Jónsdóttir. The Ísafold Spa name is derived from Old Norse — íss (ice) and fold (earth/land) — a poetic name for Iceland itself. Holds Green Key sustainability certification. Ranked #24 of 61 hotels in Reykjavik on TripAdvisor with 3,100+ reviews.
Þingholt occupies a converted 1940s industrial building on a quiet side street just off Laugavegur, Reykjavik's main shopping drag. Icelandic-born, L.A.-based architect Gulla Jónsdóttir did the interiors: largely monochrome, minimalist, with nature-inspired details that feel genuinely Icelandic rather than generic Nordic. With 52 rooms, a proper spa, and a lounge bar that locals actually use, it punches well above its modest footprint.
