Thorngrove Manor is a hand-built fantasy castle perched in the Adelaide Hills — real turrets, rough stone walls, heraldic carvings, and rooms stuffed with 18th and 19th century European antiques. The owners, Kenneth and Nydia Lehmann, built it obsessively from scratch and still run it themselves. Here is the thing: they only accept one couple at a time. You will never see another guest. Ever.

Two levels connected by a stone spiral newel staircase. Grand ornamental stone working hooded fireplace in the lounge. Hand-painted vaulted ceilings in bright colour, French hand-loomed tapestries, and handmade French Declercq silk tassels throughout. Continental King C19th carved bed-head in the bedroom. Ensuite with granite vanity and 2-person spa bath (recently fully renovated). Separate kitchenette with granite benchtop. Juliet-style balcony. 'The stuff dreams and fairy-tales are made of.'

Ground-level castle suite with fortified stone walls hung with French heraldic tapestries. King-size carved oak four-poster bed adorned with squirrels and oak leaves draped in European woven tapestry. Underground cellar-inspired private lounge/dining room with Georgian Gothic oak chairs circa 1740 and carved refectory table. Rustic flagstone private courtyard/terrace with English box hedging and topiary. Renovated 2-person spa bath. Working log fireplace upstairs.

Currently unavailable to book. Private gated driveway entry and entrance portico. Suite includes private entry hall, lounge/dining room, bedroom, and ensuite bathroom. Dining room features baronial-style fireplace with log fire, antique German piano, and rare James Ballantine Scottish ecclesiastical stained glass windows circa 1890. Hand-gilded 23ct heritage timber-beamed ceiling. Glass-walled ensuite with antique tiling overlooking a tranquil pond and parterre garden.

Observatory Suite
Third-floor retreat entered via a stone spiral staircase. The centrepiece is a circular semi-sunken spa bath with golden painted stars shining above it in a cobalt sky. Steeply vaulted timber-beamed tower bedroom with panoramic windows and uninterrupted views over treetops to the horizon. C18th hand-carved English Oak king bed, polished timber floors with Hali NZ wool and silk rugs. Leather sofa and bergere armchairs in the lounge/dining room. L'Occitane bath products provided.

Split-level suite entered via a semicircular staircase. The 4-poster English Elm king bed is hung with carved heraldic lions draped in GP&J Baker fabric and French Houlés tassels. Rare signed 1835 French Aubusson embroidery and an antique Raingo Frères bronze ormolu mantle clock circa 1820 feature prominently. Adjoining large open terrace (53 sqm) for alfresco dining with expansive treetop views and sunset vistas beyond the battlements. Rare 1890 Ballantine & Co Scottish stained glass window panels.
King · 65 sqmTower Loft Room
Reached via a spiral staircase inside a crenellated tower. The entry is presided over by a life-size Auguste Moreau bronze statue from 1890. Queen-size hand-carved Ebony bed is the centrepiece, flanked by French gilded antique bedside cabinets. Ensuite has an opening gable roof window, deep porcelain spa bath, and separate rain shower. Private balcony with outdoor dining and sweeping treetop views.

A playful in-room gourmet experience combining a lavish charcuterie platter with Scrabble-themed table settings — personalised name tile holders, Scrabble cups, regional delicacies and artisanal cheeses.
The castle architecture and manicured grounds make for a popular wedding photography backdrop. A site fee applies for external couples; it's complimentary for manor guests.
