Tocen Goshobo
Historic Japanese ryokan with understated contemporary touches. Traditional tatami rooms, deliberately dim atmosphere inspired by Tanizaki's 'In Praise of Shadows,' and a semi-mixed onsen that feels like it belongs to another century. Formal in the best sense — staff explain everything in English, yukata are expected, and there's a clear ritual to the whole experience.
Book the private onsen bath (outside the main building, about a 10-minute walk away) in advance at check-in — it runs 3,200–4,200 yen for 50 minutes and gives you both gold and silver spring water to yourself
Why It Matters
One of the oldest continuously operating hot-spring inns in Japan, established in 1191. Has hosted Shogun Yoshimitsu Ashikaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and literary giants including Junichiro Tanizaki and Yoshikawa Eiji. The Kinsen (gold spring) water — naturally reddish-brown from iron content with salinity several times that of seawater — is among the most prized in Japan. Now in its 16th generation of the Kanai family.
Tocen Goshobo has been sitting on this same patch of Arima since 1191 — that's over 800 years as a working inn, making it the oldest hot-spring ryokan in the area. The name itself tells the story: 'tosen' means 'clay spring,' a nod to the brick-red Kinsen (golden spring) water that stains the stone baths terra-cotta and warms guests to the bone. The current wooden building dates to the early Showa era, when writer Junichiro Tanizaki was a regular — he supposedly loved that the place kept things deliberately dim, an aesthetic you can still feel today. Three stories of creaking wooden corridors, tatami rooms with shoji screens, and a quietly contemporary edge that stops short of being precious.
