Why It Matters
Founded in 2008 as Nairobi's first true luxury boutique hotel. It holds 900 African artworks and artifacts curated by co-founder Shamim Ehsani's mother. Jiko Restaurant is said to be the first five-star hotel restaurant in Africa to celebrate indigenous cuisines. Kaya Spa was named to Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List Spas in 2011 and won Best Spa in Kenya at the 2016 World Spa Awards. The hotel appeared on Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List Hotels in both the US and UK editions in 2010.
Tribe is a family-owned, five-star boutique hotel founded in 2008 by the Ehsani family in Nairobi's Gigiri diplomatic district, steps from The Village Market shopping complex. The building's non-conformist angular architecture, soaring four-floor atrium, and a collection of 900 hand-curated African artworks make it look nothing like a traditional business hotel. It plays both roles well — great for the UN/embassy circuit crowd by week, and a genuinely beautiful place to unwind any night of the week.
