Why It Matters
One of the world's largest private residences, still home to the Jodhpur royal family. The hotel portion is managed by Taj Hotels. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra married here in 2018. The subterranean Zodiac Pool, 45-metre dome, and access to the palace museum set it apart from any other Rajasthan property.
This is not a palace that used to be a palace. Umaid Bhawan is still actively occupied by Maharaja Gaj Singh II and his family — they live in one wing while guests check into another. Built between 1929 and 1943 on Chittar Hill, the highest point in Jodhpur, the 347-room golden sandstone structure was originally commissioned as a famine relief project to employ thousands of drought-stricken farmers. Today the Taj Group manages the hotel wing: 71 rooms and suites, all in full Art Deco splendour, with a subterranean Zodiac Pool, 26 acres of manicured gardens, and a dome that rivals the Taj Mahal in scale.

These were originally the quarters of visiting royalty, so the heritage pedigree is real. Each has a unique theme — bedecked in green and maroon — with a combined bedroom and dining area plus a private sit-out overlooking the grounds. These were the Maharaja's personal rooms. A long balcony overlooks the courtyard, and the suite comes with a grand bedroom, impressive sitting area, adjoining dining space, and — crucially — an in-room spa and steam room with Jacuzzi. One of the most impressive suites in any Indian hotel.
