Why It Matters

Cambridge's oldest hotel, open since 1834, completely rebuilt behind its original sandstone facade at a reported cost of £80 million. Architect John Simpson and interior designer Martin Brudnizki reimagined the whole thing in 2018 — Edwardian interiors, bespoke leather-padded writing desks, tiered chandeliers, and bookshelves curated by Heywood Hill of Mayfair. It sits right on the corner of Parker's Piece, the Victorian park where the rules of football are said to have been invented, and is ten minutes on foot from Cambridge's university colleges.

Entry-level rooms, double bed, Edwardian design with colourful contemporary decoration. All 26 face inward onto the courtyard — quiet, but no park or street view. Good if you want peace; less good if you want light and views. Bathrooms have rain showers, underfloor heating, and D R Harris toiletries.

Named after Cambridge-affiliated authors and alumni, each suite is individually curated around its namesake. All have a large separate seating area with chaise longues and armchairs, bookshelves stocked by Heywood Hill of Mayfair, and a Book Butler service. Bathrooms feature both walk-in rain showers and freestanding claw-foot bathtubs. Complimentary locally-produced wines on arrival. Hints of Cambridge blue, yellow and red in the furnishings.

Noticeably larger than Classic rooms with richer furnishings and a more generous feel. King or twin configuration, bespoke armchair and writing desk. Bathrooms have either a deep bathtub or rain shower (not always both). Park-view upgrade available. Some noise from Regent Street in street-facing rooms.
