University Arms Hotel
Classically British, academically-inflected luxury. Bookish without being stuffy. Think velvet-upholstered club chairs, Cambridge-blue panelling, printed headboards named after Bloomsbury Set members, and Do Not Disturb signs shaped like bookmarks.
Cosy rooms are the smallest category at 19m² and face internally — very quiet, but genuinely compact
Why It Matters
Cambridge's oldest and most prominent hotel, totally rebuilt behind its historic facade. Part of Marriott's Autograph Collection. Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice award winner in 2023 and 2025. The on-site Parker's Tavern — led by Chef Director Tristan Welch — is a destination restaurant in its own right. The Book Butler service, Heywood Hill-curated libraries in every suite, and a regular programme of PhD talks (Ideas in Bloom) make it feel genuinely tied to the academic city around it.
Cambridge's oldest hotel, open since 1834, completely rebuilt behind its original sandstone facade at a reported cost of £80 million. Architect John Simpson and interior designer Martin Brudnizki reimagined the whole thing in 2018 — Edwardian interiors, bespoke leather-padded writing desks, tiered chandeliers, and bookshelves curated by Heywood Hill of Mayfair. It sits right on the corner of Parker's Piece, the Victorian park where the rules of football are said to have been invented, and is ten minutes on foot from Cambridge's university colleges.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A Matterport 3D virtual tour of the entire ground floor and room categories, accessible before or during your stay.
Request a personalised book selection from the hotel's Heywood Hill of Mayfair-curated library. A member of staff hand-delivers books on a silver platter to your room. Available to all guests; suites already have a curated Heywood Hill bookshelf in-room.
The hotel offers complimentary bicycle hire for guests — the most sensible way to explore Cambridge. The flat terrain makes cycling easy; King's College and the Backs are under 10 minutes by bike.
Live jazz at Parker's Tavern bar every Friday, 9–11:30pm. Professional trios led by saxophonists Sam Miles and Tim Boniface. No booking required and open to non-guests — probably the best thing to do in Cambridge on a Friday night.
Free, informal evening lecture series held in the hotel Library. PhD researchers and recent Cambridge graduates present their thesis work in an accessible, non-academic format. Hosted regularly throughout the year. Open to all.
Free Saturday morning guided city tours for hotel guests. A good starting point for first-time Cambridge visitors.
