Vetera Matera
Cave luxury meets understated Italian elegance. Dark, intimate, and quiet underground — atmospheric rather than gloomy. Noble-floor rooms are brighter with high ceilings and big views. The whole property leans romantic, and couples clearly make up most of the guest mix.
Book a hypogeum master suite if budget allows — the private underground pool experience is genuinely unlike anything else in Italy
Why It Matters
Matera's only five-star Relais & Châteaux property, and the first albergo diffuso to carry the R&C insignia. Sleeping in a cave is the whole point of visiting Matera — this is the most luxurious way to do it. The top hypogeum master suites have private underground pools carved into the rock.
Vetera Matera opened in spring 2025 as the first and only Relais & Châteaux albergo diffuso in Matera — which is a fancy way of saying the hotel is spread across multiple medieval and 19th-century buildings connected by stone staircases, ancient alleys, and shared courtyards. Eight years in the making, it's 23 rooms carved into and built around the UNESCO-listed Sassi di Matera, managed by fifth-generation hoteliers from the Russo Attanasio family (the same people behind Bellevue Syrene in Sorrento). The big draw here is category: you can sleep in a cave room with raw tuff stone walls and ancient vaulted ceilings, or opt for a sun-drenched noble-floor room with sweeping Sassi panoramas. Not both at the same time, obviously.
