Why It Matters
First voco brand hotel in Japan. The decision to launch in Osaka rather than Tokyo gave the property room to stand out in a less saturated premium market. The interior design deliberately layers the area's Taisho-era mercantile history into a contemporary frame — salvaged timber, original-site artifacts, commissioned artwork.
Japan's first voco hotel opened in May 2023 in the Kyomachibori business district of Osaka's Nishi-ku. The exterior is handsome in a quietly contemporary way, but inside things get more interesting: artwork referencing Kyomachibori's trading-era history, actual wooden beams salvaged from the original building on the site, and a signature spiral staircase linking the ground-floor dining spaces. Rooms lean gray with yellow accents — calmer than the lobby, but still sharp. It's a 13-floor building with 191 rooms, and the location lives up to the name.
