Why It Matters
Popularly known as Hotel Vela (the Sail Hotel) for its shape, it was designed by Ricardo Bofill and is the only Barcelona hotel with direct private beach access. It hosts Europe's first W Sound Suite (a professional recording studio), the NOXE Japanese fine-dining and club on the 26th floor, and runs the annual WET Deck Summer Series music events over the Mediterranean. Biosphere Certified and LEED Certified.
W Barcelona is a 473-room, 5-star beachfront hotel shaped like a sail — a Ricardo Bofill-designed glass-and-steel tower that stands at the tip of Barceloneta, practically in the sea. It opened in 2009 as W's first hotel in Western Europe and remains one of the most visually striking buildings on Barcelona's waterfront. The hotel has direct access to Playa Sant Sebastià, three pool areas, six dining and bar concepts (from a 26th-floor Japanese restaurant to a fire-cooking grill), and an AWAY Spa with a full GETAWAY relaxation zone. It's loud, design-forward, and very much a scene.
