Why It Matters
The first Waldorf Astoria in the Nordic countries, and arguably the first true luxury hotel Finland has ever had. The four-building complex is a genuine piece of Helsinki history. The attic duplex suites, with original heritage-agency-preserved timber beams and private spa setups, are one-of-a-kind in the city. Every guest gets a dedicated Personal Concierge.
Finland's first Waldorf Astoria opened in December 2023 as Hotel Maria and rebranded in August 2025 after being acquired by Singapore's M&L Hospitality Group and handed to Hilton to operate. The hotel spans four interconnected historic buildings designed by Finnish architects Evert Lagerspetz and Armas Siitonen, originally completed between 1885 and 1930 as the Uusimaa Battalion officers' barracks. The result is 116 rooms and suites that pull off genuine Nordic restraint at genuine luxury quality — earthy palettes, handcrafted furniture, parquet floors, chandelier lighting, and Bulgari amenities — without feeling like a museum piece.
