Why It Matters
One of the few hotels anywhere to win major architectural prizes (Architecture Prize Berlin 2023, German Sustainability Prize for Architecture 2022, BDA Prize Berlin 2021) and a Michelin One Key. The building — a listed 1896 prison, abandoned for 27 years — was transformed by its architect-owners with bricks reused on-site, natural air conditioning via thermal mass, and 45% of previously sealed surfaces converted to gardens. National Geographic named it one of its Best of the World for 2024.
A 44-room boutique hotel inside a meticulously converted 1896 courthouse and women's prison in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Grüntuch Ernst Architects spent over a decade opening up cell walls, unsealing courtyards, and covering facades in ivy — the result is genuinely quiet and calming without being austere. Cell doors are still original, but the rooms behind them are now white and airy, with COCO-MAT natural-material beds and Frama St. Pauls toiletries in the bathrooms.

Most rooms were created by merging three former cell units, which gives them genuinely varied floor plans — no two are identical. Enlarged windows face the quiet inner courtyard. A solid all-rounder for couples, business travelers, and visiting parents with a baby (cot on request). Can connect to an adjacent Cosy room.

Everything the Classic offers, plus room to stretch out — the hotel specifically calls out space for a yoga mat. Two configurations: one version has extra shelving and generous storage (good for longer stays), the other has a section separable by a sliding door (good for parents with a child). Two former prison cells merged into the hotel's most compact room. High-level original windows in the bathroom allow a walk-in rain shower with natural daylight in complete privacy. The double bed sits in a sleeping alcove on a pedestal, which gives the room its name. Small but smartly considered. Some Cosy rooms can connect to an adjacent Classic — useful for families.

The hotel's largest room at 72 sqm — more apartment than hotel room. Full kitchenette (fridge, dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine; no stove), proper dining table, sofas, armchairs, and a private entrance directly from the main garden via an exclusive staircase. Garden views from every area. The only room with a small bathtub alongside the rain shower.

Part of the new penthouse addition on the top floor. Floor-to-ceiling glass facades are screened by delicate metal chains on springs — they catch the sunlight and shift slightly in the breeze, giving total privacy while keeping the room feeling open.
