Wilmina Hotel
Minimalist, nature-forward, historically resonant. Think raw brick walls softened by pressed botanicals, handmade wooden furniture, and courtyards that feel more like wild Berlin gardens than hotel landscaping. Calm is the organizing principle here — no DJ booth, no hustle.

Why It Matters
One of the few hotels anywhere to win major architectural prizes (Architecture Prize Berlin 2023, German Sustainability Prize for Architecture 2022, BDA Prize Berlin 2021) and a Michelin One Key. The building — a listed 1896 prison, abandoned for 27 years — was transformed by its architect-owners with bricks reused on-site, natural air conditioning via thermal mass, and 45% of previously sealed surfaces converted to gardens. National Geographic named it one of its Best of the World for 2024.
A 44-room boutique hotel inside a meticulously converted 1896 courthouse and women's prison in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Grüntuch Ernst Architects spent over a decade opening up cell walls, unsealing courtyards, and covering facades in ivy — the result is genuinely quiet and calming without being austere. Cell doors are still original, but the rooms behind them are now white and airy, with COCO-MAT natural-material beds and Frama St. Pauls toiletries in the bathrooms.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The former courthouse (front building) has been repurposed as a multi-disciplinary art and cultural space, hosting exhibitions, gallery pop-ups (including Kicken Berlin gallery), and creative events open to guests and the public.
Neighboring studio offering Reformer Pilates, Mat Pilates, HIIT, Barre, and Yoga. Hotel guests receive a 20% discount — ask at reception for the code.
Bikes available to rent through the hotel. Charlottenburg Palace is a 10-minute cycle; International Club Berlin (25m pool, tennis, golf) is 6 minutes by bike.
Members-only club 6 minutes by bike with tennis courts, golf, and a 25-meter pool. Reception has a very limited number of complimentary day passes for hotel guests — worth asking about on arrival.
An elegant billiard table alongside beautifully designed board game classics in a dedicated communal room.
Full-height windows, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Used as a breakfast space in the morning; doubles as a work and reading room from 2pm onward.
The formerly sealed prison courtyards are now lushly landscaped gardens. The main garden courtyard acts as the hotel's first 'room' — a green foyer of trees, shrubs, and climbing plants. Seating throughout.
