Halal Strategy in Hangzhou
Rely on clearly marked 清真 (Qingzhen) Muslim restaurants for meat dishes, and use vegetarian/seafood options in regular places while confirming no pork, lard or cooking wine in your specific dish. A translation card stating ‘no pork, no lard, no alcohol’ is very helpful.
Transit Between Green Areas
Tea villages, Yunxi bamboo, Xixi Wetland and Northern Peak are best reached by taxi or ride‑hailing, usually 20–35 minutes from West Lake. Have each destination’s name and address in Chinese on your phone to show drivers.
Connectivity Without Local SIM
Download offline maps (e.g., Google offline plus a Chinese map app if possible) and save key locations in advance. Screenshots of hotel bookings, addresses and key phrases work well when you’re offline.
Cash & Payments
China is very cashless, but as a visitor you can still pay with cash in most small places and use Alipay with an international card in many larger ones. Withdraw some RMB on arrival for taxis, smaller shops and cafes that may not accept foreign cards.
Language & Translation
Learn a few basic Chinese phrases and use a translation app that works offline for menus and simple questions. Show written Chinese for ‘no pork’ (不要猪肉) and ‘no alcohol’ (不要酒) when ordering.
Crowd‑Timing Around West Lake
Visit West Lake’s most popular spots (Su Causeway, Leifeng Pagoda, music fountain) early in the day or later in the evening, especially on weekends and holidays, and save mid‑day for quieter corners or indoor tea breaks.
Packing for a Green City
Bring comfortable walking shoes, a light rain jacket, a collapsible umbrella and insect repellent for wetland and bamboo areas. A small daypack makes carrying water and snacks easy on hikes.
Ticketing & Reservations
You can usually buy tickets for temples, pagodas, boats and Xixi Wetland at the gate without pre‑booking. If you ever choose a day tour from Hangzhou, confirm beforehand that they can arrange a halal or fully vegetarian lunch.
