Halal Food Strategy on Isla Mujeres
There are unlikely to be fully halal-certified restaurants, so rely on clearly vegetarian and seafood dishes, avoid pork and alcohol entirely, and politely ask staff to confirm no lard or alcohol in cooking and to keep your food separate from pork items. Consider bringing some packaged halal snacks (nuts, dates, halal-certified biscuits) from home for peace of mind and for the kids.
Cash, ATMs, and Tipping
Carry a mix of small peso bills for taxis, golf carts, beach clubs, and tips; many places expect about 10–15% if service is good. ATMs are available in Centro but can run out of cash; avoid stand-alone ATMs in dark or isolated spots and try to use those at banks or major supermarkets in Cancun before coming to the island.
Ferry and Transfer Logistics
From Cancun airport, you’ll travel to Puerto Juarez (Ultramar ferry) and take a 20–25 minute ferry to Isla Mujeres. Try to keep one small day bag with swimsuits, sunscreen, and a change of clothes so you can hit the beach even if your room isn’t ready when you arrive.
Sun, Heat, and Midday Breaks
Plan water-based or shaded activities (or a rest at your hotel) between about 12:30–3:30 PM when the sun is strongest. Long-sleeve rash guards for the kids, wide-brim hats, and frequent water breaks will make the trip more comfortable for everyone.
Safety in the Water
Even in shallow water, have the kids use life jackets or floatation vests if they are not strong swimmers, and always keep an adult within arm’s reach when snorkeling or playing near rocks. Avoid swimming if there are strong currents or red flags, and follow boat crew instructions carefully on any tour.
