Plan Around Prayer Times and Crowds
Structure each day with major activities between Dhuhr–Asr or after ‘Isha, and try to enter the Haram at least 45–60 minutes before Jumu’ah and busy Maghrib/‘Isha times. This minimizes being caught in dense crowds and gives you calmer transitions.
Use Taxis and Short Rides Wisely
For areas like Jabal Thawr, Jabal al-Nour, Al Aziziyah, and Makkah Mall, taxis or ride-hailing apps are easiest. Confirm your destination name clearly in Arabic or show it on a map, and agree on an approximate fare before you start if not using an app.
Hydrate and Rest in Shaded Places
Carry a small refillable bottle, drink Zamzam, and plan short breaks in shaded colonnades, malls, or your hotel room during the heat of the afternoon, especially on days with hills or long walks.
Footwear and Socks Strategy
Bring comfortable sandals or walking shoes that slip on and off easily, plus spare socks, since you’ll often carry your footwear into the Haram in a small bag and may walk long distances indoors.
Offline Maps and Simple Landmarks
Before arrival, download offline maps of central Makkah and star your hotel, key Haram gates (like King Abdulaziz Gate), and main roads. Use obvious landmarks like the Clock Tower to orient yourself instead of tiny street names.
Cash, Cards, and Small Purchases
Most major shops accept cards, but keep some small cash for taxis, small eateries, and street vendors. Withdraw or exchange at reputable ATMs or bank counters in the Clock Tower complex or malls.
Respectful Photography
While general city and mountain shots are fine, be very discreet near worshippers and avoid close-up photos of people without permission, especially inside or near the Haram.
Pace Yourself with Umrah Rites
If you perform Umrah, consider spacing out extra tawaf and Sa’i over the week instead of doing everything intense back-to-back on one day, especially in hot seasons.
