Keeping Food Reliably Halal in Mestia
There are very few fully halal-certified venues in Mestia, but you can still eat comfortably by focusing on vegetarian, cheese, and fish dishes. Always ask staff to avoid pork, lard, and alcohol in any form (wine sauces, spirits for flambé) and, if possible, request separate pans or grills. Learn or show a written note in Georgian stating ‘no pork, no alcohol in food’ to reduce confusion.
Simple Transport Between Clusters
Within Mestia itself, you can walk almost everywhere in 10–20 minutes. For out-of-town spots like Chalaadi, Hatsvali, and Ushguli, ask your guesthouse to arrange a taxi or join a small-group tour—this is common practice and usually offers fair, set prices. Confirm the rate and pickup time the evening before so you can relax in the morning.
What to Pack for a Relaxed Mountain Weekend
Bring comfortable walking shoes with decent grip, a light daypack, a refillable water bottle, layers (T-shirt, fleece, light down or softshell), a rain jacket, cap, sunglasses, and sunscreen. In shoulder seasons, lightweight gloves and a beanie make sunrise and evening walks much more comfortable.
Cash, Connectivity, and Offline Tools
Mestia’s mobile data and Wi‑Fi can be patchy and slow, especially during bad weather or power cuts. Download offline maps (e.g., Google Maps or Maps.me for Mestia and Ushguli), keep key details like your guesthouse address saved offline, and carry enough cash for all local transport, smaller meals, and entrance fees.
Respecting Local Culture and Nature
Svaneti is traditional and deeply religious; dress modestly in villages and churches (shoulders and knees covered), ask before photographing people, and speak quietly in sacred spaces. On trails, stay on paths, don’t pick alpine flowers, and pack out all trash, as ecosystems here are fragile and waste disposal is limited.
