Good to Know
Pace Your Overland Days
Some days between Marrakech, the desert, and Fes involve long but scenic drives across the Atlas and desert plains. Plan snacks, water, downloaded entertainment, and embrace these as part of the adventure instead of over-scheduling extra activities.
Bargaining & Fixed Prices
In medina souks, bargaining is expected for non-food items—start at around half the initial price and negotiate with a smile. For a break from haggling, look for government-run or clearly priced cooperative shops.
Using Grands Taxis & Buses
Intercity buses (CTM, Supratours) are comfortable and budget-friendly; grands taxis fill shared seats on popular routes, leaving when full. Always confirm the price per seat before departing and keep small bills handy.
Handling Guides and Touts
Around medinas and squares, some people will offer unsolicited guiding; politely decline with a firm “la, shukran” (no, thank you) if you are not interested, and walk on without engaging further.
Staying Connected
For occasional connectivity, buy a local SIM card at arrival (e.g., at major airports or city kiosks) with a modest data package, and use offline maps for medinas where GPS can be patchy.
Food Safety & Trying Street Food
Choose busy stalls with high turnover, avoid salads that look like they’ve been sitting out, and start with cooked dishes like harira, brochettes, and tajines to minimize stomach issues.
Respect Around Mosques & Religious Sites
Non-Muslims cannot enter most mosques’ inner prayer halls in Morocco, but you can appreciate exteriors and nearby squares; avoid loud behavior and be mindful during call to prayer times.
Tipping Norms
Small tips (5–10 MAD in cafés, a bit more in restaurants or for porters and guides) are appreciated; service charges may not reach staff, so round up in cash when service is good.
