Soft Sands & Stone Towers: 7 Days in Southern Sardinia
Seven slow days of Sardinian beaches, history, and easy flavors
Planning a trip to Sardinia?
A slow, sun-soaked week based in Cagliari and Villasimius, balancing turquoise beaches, ancient ruins, and relaxed coastal towns. This itinerary clusters each day by area to minimize transit, with plenty of free time, nature immersion, and easy local food stops.
Highlights
Stretch out on Cagliari’s long city beach, with calm water, bar kiosks, and easy sunset strolls.
Wander medieval walls, churches, and viewpoints in Cagliari’s hilltop historic quarter.
Relax at Porto Giunco and Notteri lagoon, where flamingos often feed behind the beach.[2]
Step back millennia at a Nuragic site to glimpse Sardinia’s unique prehistoric stone towers.[2]
Spend a day at sea exploring coves and swimming in clear turquoise water off the south coast.
Good to Know
Consider a Rental Car
Outside of Cagliari and a few main towns, public transport can be sparse and often limited to a couple of departures per day; having a car greatly expands your access to beaches, viewpoints, and small villages.[2]
Protect Against Strong Sun
Many Sardinian beaches have little natural shade, and even in shoulder seasons the sun is intense, so a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and possibly a travel umbrella or light cover-up are important.[1]
Timing Your Beach Days
To avoid the most crowded hours and midday heat, plan main sunbathing and swimming from roughly 9–11 AM and after 4 PM, using early afternoon for shade, lunch, or siesta.
Driving Coastal Roads Slowly
Southern coastal routes like Cagliari–Villasimius are scenic but can be narrow and winding, so allow extra time and avoid tight appointments immediately after a drive.
Respect for Religious Sites
When entering churches and sanctuaries, cover shoulders and avoid very short shorts, keep voices low, and avoid flash photography if services are underway.
Cash for Small Purchases
While cards work widely in cities, some markets, small bars, parking areas, and kiosks still prefer cash, especially outside peak season.
Local Dining Rhythm
Lunch often runs from about 12:30–2:30 PM and dinner rarely starts before 7:30–8 PM, with some places closing one fixed day per week.
Pack for Mixed Evenings
Even near the coast, evenings can turn breezy, so bring a light layer; many venues are casual, so you do not need formal clothing but smart-casual works everywhere.
