Good to Know
Protect Your Valuables from Water
During Songkran, assume that any time you step near main streets or the moat, someone may splash you with water—often from pickup trucks or large buckets. Use a waterproof phone pouch, keep passports and extra cash locked in the hotel safe, and carry only what you’re ready to get wet in a small, sealable bag.
Dress for Temples and Water Fights
Pack light, quick-dry clothes that are both modest and practical: knee-length shorts or trousers and T-shirts (not thin white fabric) work for visiting temples in the morning and playing in the water later. Avoid denim, heavy shoes, and flip-flops that easily slip; secure sandals are ideal.
Plan Around Heat and Kids’ Energy
Temperatures can be very hot in April, especially mid-afternoon. Aim for temple visits and walks before 11 AM, water fights or pool time between late morning and mid-afternoon when you want to cool down, and indoor or shaded activities later in the day.
Use Grab and Local Taxis Wisely
During Songkran, traffic can slow and some drivers may avoid the wettest streets. Use the Grab app where available or agree on a fare with red songthaew taxis before boarding; build in extra time for any cross-city trips, especially to and from the airport or mountain areas.
Halal Food and Prayer Planning
Chiang Mai has a small but active Muslim community, especially around Chang Khlan and near mosques; many clearly marked halal restaurants cluster there. Before your trip, save a few halal spots and nearby mosques on an offline map so that even without constant internet, you know where to head for meals and prayer.
