1864 The Sea Captain's House
Historic mansion meets Cycladic cave house. Baroque details (four-poster beds, antiques, art on walls) layered over the island's trademark whitewashed minimalism. Intimate and personal rather than slick-resort.
Get up at dawn and walk Oia before the cruise ship crowds arrive — the village is deserted and the light is extraordinary
Why It Matters
Listed in the Michelin Guide and featured on Tablet Hotels. One of Santorini's oldest restored houses, sitting literally steps from the iconic Oia blue dome photo spot. Just four suites, no front desk, and a host (Takis) who personally arranges everything from airport pickups to restaurant reservations.
A four-suite property occupying a restored 19th-century sea captain's mansion on the caldera edge in Oia. The two-storey structure is partly carved into the cliff — dark volcanic stone on the renaissance-inspired upper facade, whitewashed island style below. Inside: wide-plank floors (rare for Santorini, found only in the old captains' mansions), cross-vaulted ceilings among the highest in Oia, and antique canopy beds sharing space with marble bathrooms. No reception, no pool, no lobby — just four individually decorated suites and caldera views that hit you the moment you walk out the door.
