Amerikalinjen opened in 2019 in the restored 1919 headquarters of the Norwegian America Line — the shipping company that ferried nearly a million Norwegian emigrants to the United States. The building is a neo-baroque landmark on Jernbanetorget Square, right next to Oslo Central Station, and 86 rooms sit behind its grand facade. Grand staircases, vintage elevators, high ceilings, and framed historical sailing menus are all still here. But so is a seriously award-winning cocktail bar and a proper basement jazz club.

A serious step up. The Fortuna has a spacious bathroom, a separate seating area, and a balcony with city views — which is a rarity in central Oslo hotels at this price point. Named evocatively; these are the rooms used in the Romantic Getaway and Honeymooners packages.

The entry-level room is compact at 19 sqm but the high ceilings and large windows stop it feeling cramped. Walk-in shower, Norwegian designer lamps, Nespresso machine, minibar, and objects from the Norwegian America Line era. Honestly, you'll spend most of your time in the public spaces anyway.

Slightly more space than Standard, a King bed instead of Queen, and — crucially — views of the city, the Haven courtyard, or the fjord depending on which room you get. Still on the cosy side, but the step up in bed size and outlook is worth it for a longer stay.

The top of the house at 50 sqm. Separate bedroom and living room, a balcony that looks straight toward the Oslo Opera and the fjord, and a bathroom with both a bathtub and a walk-in shower decorated with fan-shaped mosaics.
