Beirut
Art-collector's private home meets social gathering place. Ottoman stone architecture, curated fine art and archaeological pieces throughout, sandstone terraces, a pool garden courtyard. Intellectual, sociable, not stuffy. Gemmayze's creative crowd treats it as a local haunt.
Ask for a room that doesn't face directly onto the courtyard if you're a light sleeper — the bars run late
Why It Matters
Named to Condé Nast Traveler's Hot List 2021 and a Tablet Hotels/Michelin Guide selection. The only hotel in Lebanon built on the actual site of a Roman villa — vestiges visible in the garden. The art collection alone, which includes works by Nadim Karam, Cuban pieces, and a significant Roman mosaic collection, sets it apart from any other property in the region.
A family estate turned boutique hotel, Arthaus Beirut sprawls across four restored Ottoman-era stone buildings on Gouraud Street in Gemmayze. Owners Nabil and Zoe Debs lived here for years before converting it — and their decades of art collecting are all over the place, from Byzantine-era archaeological fragments to Roman mosaics unearthed right in the garden. Fifteen rooms and suites (named after Debs family members, naturally) blend rough-hewn stone walls and arched ceilings with contemporary artworks and proper hotel comforts. It's adults only, and the vibe is equal parts private residence and social art hub.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Arthaus International positions the property as a platform for the visual arts, hosting roundtable discussions, local and international guest speaker evenings, and performance events throughout the year. Check the calendar at arthaus.international/calendar/ for current programming.
A double-height gallery at the heart of the hotel hosts exhibitions and events throughout the year. The permanent collection includes Byzantine-era works, Roman mosaics, Roman archaeological artifacts, rare books, and works by international artists such as Nadim Karam, Alejandro Gomez Cangas, Sebastian Nadjar, and Cuba's Sussurro. Some pieces are available for purchase.
The concierge team offers highly personalized itineraries across Lebanon — access to the Baalbek International Festival, the Beiteddine Art Festival, day trips to the Bekaa Valley, and arranged visits to cultural sites. They also organize shopping excursions (reportedly even sourcing local wine and olive oil) and can arrange special rates at luxury hammams outside the city.
A partially shaded swimming pool set within the expansive sandstone-terraced garden. Sun loungers and umbrellas available. Open 7am–6pm during the season. The pool area is a genuine social space — Arthaus Kitchen serves poolside.
