Lyon
French Haussmannian grandeur meets Italian luxury — think velvet armchairs, marble bathrooms, rose quartz crystals in the spa, and a menu that leans hard into Naples and the Amalfi Coast. Formal but warm. This is the kind of place that dresses up.
Non-guests can access the spa: €50 for 2 hours including pool, sauna, and hammam — book in advance, especially weekends
Why It Matters
Historically, this building hosted Martin Luther King, Édith Piaf, Jean Gabin, and Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. The spa alone — with its stone-vault swimming pool, hammam, sauna, and ESPA treatments — would justify a stay. It holds the Green Key sustainability certification and is a member of Preferred Hotels & Resorts and the I Prefer loyalty program.
A proper grand hotel on Lyon's Presqu'île — the narrow strip of land caught between the Rhône and Saône rivers. The building itself is a late 19th-century Haussmannian landmark, originally one of the city's very first hotels, and it looks every bit the part: black marble, Vicenza stone, soaring ceilings. But walk further in and you get the twist — the interiors carry a deliberate Italian accent, courtesy of the Boscolo family who took full ownership in 2016 and handed the renovation to a Rome-based architecture studio. The spa is the real showpiece: a 450 m² underground wellness space built into original vaulted stone cellars that genuinely feel like Roman baths.
