Why It Matters
One of Bologna's most singular small lodgings — a Michelin Guide-listed, Tablet Hotels property with only six rooms, each a curated art installation rooted in family lore. The Bertagni family founded Bologna's famous pasta factory (tortellini shaped after the bellybutton of Venus, per family legend). That backstory soaks into every room.
Casa Bertagni started as a private family home in 1948 — built by Pietro and Antonietta Bertagni, a cosmopolitan Bolognese couple who wanted to live surrounded by friends and stimulating company. By the 1950s it had become a proper literary salon, drawing artists, writers, politicians and intellectuals. Today it's a six-room boutique guest house, still family-owned and run by Guido Carlo Vincenzi, an architect and designer who is the youngest branch of the Bertagni family tree. Each room is named for a virtue — Temperance, Justice, Strength, Faith, Hope, Charity — and each one is a kaleidoscopic world of its own, blending antique family pieces with contemporary art.

Named for love toward others, this room was furnished by architect Enrico De Angeli for the occasion of a Bertagni family wedding. Elegant and light. The bathroom has a whirlpool tub. The convertible bed can be split into two singles for flexibility.

Faith (Fede)
The most stripped-back room. Blue and white palette — pure and clean. Ancient wooden skis belonging to Pietro and Antonietta Bertagni hang on the wall. A restful, calm space that feels like a break from sensory overload. Classified as Standard rather than Deluxe.

The largest room at 23 sqm — gold and red everywhere, conveying energy and abundance. Artist Davide Sabbatini decorated the wardrobe panels using lace and fabrics from the Bertagni family spanning the 1700s to today. Double shower bathroom. The Tablet Hotels writer called this one their favorite.

Justice (Giustizia)
A dynamic, art-forward room dominated by Davide Sabbatini's The Tree of Life mural — neoclassical figures in blue and orange. The table in the room dates to the 1940s and came from grandfather Pietro's chemistry lab. The double bed converts to two singles, making it the most flexible option.

Strength (Forza)
The most historically loaded room. An imposing vintage gold-leaf fireplace and mantelpiece — originally from great-grandfather Ferdinando Bertagni's pasta-factory office — anchors the space. Brown and gold tones throughout. The Bertagni family pasta factory was the origin of Bologna's famous tortellini. King-size bed.

The smallest room, but arguably the most atmospheric. It opens onto the private garden — the hortus conclusus where grandmother Antonietta Bertagni used to read Baudelaire aloud. Lavender and red dominate, merging sacred and profane. The bathroom is the standout: soaking hot tub with Baroque detailing and Maori influences.
