Castello di Monterone
Medieval luxury boutique. Gothic arches, Etruscan urns in the cloister, coats of arms on the walls. But the beds are good and the staff are warm.
Request the Camera delle Dame if romance or spectacular panoramic views are your priority — 10 windows wrap the room and the frescoes are original
Why It Matters
The castle was inaugurated in 1849 in the presence of Gioacchino Pecci — the Archbishop of Perugia who went on to become Pope Leo XIII. It has connections going back to the Templar Knights, who used it to host pilgrims en route to Assisi. The property was also cited by the New York Times and Corriere della Sera.
A genuine 13th-century castle sitting on a hill 3km from Perugia's old town, right on the ancient road to Assisi. The 18 rooms are all different — stone walls, period frescoes, hand-crafted iron and wood furniture — yet each has proper modern plumbing, A/C, and Wi-Fi. This is one of those places where the history isn't decorative; it's structural.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The castle's inner cloister features Etruscan bas-reliefs and urns, Roman capitals, medieval coats of arms, and frescoes dating to the 15th century. A rooftop walkway offers unobstructed views of the Umbrian countryside. The lounge bar with its stained glass windows and fireplace is among the most impressive spaces.
A cozy library inside the castle for guests to read and unwind. Mentioned consistently in guest reviews as a highlight of the common spaces.
The castle sits on the road between Perugia and Assisi (25 min drive). Florence is about 2 hours. The property's 'Discover Umbria' page highlights the region's medieval towns and landscapes as natural extensions of a stay.
A dedicated meeting room is available for small business gatherings, retreats, or private functions.
A privately maintained rose garden with 250 plants across 20 varieties, planted in homage to the medieval tradition of ladies' gardens within castle walls. Plants are labeled with identification tags. Best in late May–June.
The castle is a popular wedding venue. The cloister, terraces, and rose garden make it a sought-after setting. A dedicated weddings page exists on the official website.
