Rio
Brazilian modernist design hotel. Understated, design-forward luxury. Not a party hotel — the vibe is intimate and refined, with 90 rooms that feel personal rather than grand. The kind of place where the staff remember your breakfast order by day two.
Reserve a front-row sun lounger on the rooftop in advance — only 10-12 have completely unobstructed views and they go fast
Why It Matters
The first serious design hotel to arrive on Copacabana in decades. Opened in 2016 and immediately won Condé Nast's Hot List and Interior Design Magazine's Best of Year for Foreign Boutique Hotel. The perforated facade is genuinely famous in architecture circles — it landed the cover of Architectural Record. Member of SLH (Small Luxury Hotels of the World), bookable via Hilton Honors and Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts. Also a certified B Corporation.
Emiliano Rio is a 90-room boutique hotel sitting directly on Copacabana Beach at Posto 5, the quieter southern end where the avenue starts curling toward Ipanema. The building is immediately recognizable: Studio Arthur Casas and Oppenheim Architecture & Design wrapped it in a striking facade of retractable perforated panels (cobogós) that open to flood rooms with ocean air and light, or close for privacy while still letting the breeze through. Inside, Brazilian modernism drives everything — cane, white Paraná marble, granite, stone, and furniture by '50s icons like Sergio Rodrigues sit alongside pieces by contemporary designers like Paola Lenti.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
On-site gym available to guests around the clock. The UpgradedPoints review notes guests can 'unwind in the sauna after visiting the 24-hour health club.'
The hotel extends to the sand: beach chairs, towels, and water bottles are brought down to Copacabana Beach for guests. Service runs 8am–7pm daily. Effectively extends the hotel onto one of the world's most famous beaches.
A packaged spa day for guests and non-guests, combining multiple treatments at Santapele Spa. Includes use of the spa facilities and treatment rooms.
A signature monthly experience tied to the full moon — a special dinner event that takes advantage of the rooftop setting and the dramatic moonrise over the Atlantic.
An all-you-can-eat and drink brunch at Emile Restaurant on weekends and holidays. Open to non-guests. At around R$250 (~$50 USD) per person, one of the more popular brunch options in Rio.
A dedicated honeymoon and wedding night experience, including in-room decor, spa access, and personalized service. One of the hotel's signature romantic packages.
The L-shaped rooftop infinity pool overlooking the full stretch of Copacabana Beach and the Copacabana Fort. More a sip-cocktails-and-chat pool than a lap pool. Open to guests daily from 8am. Only 10–12 front-row loungers have completely unobstructed views — worth reserving in advance.
