Fourvière Hôtel
Heritage-meets-design boutique. Monastic bones, contemporary interiors by designers Jean-Luc Mathias and Marianne Borthayre, and a sculpture trail by Franco-Argentinian artist Pablo Reinoso running through the cloister. Quiet, garden-facing, and genuinely unlike any chain hotel.
Ask for a garden-view room if you want quiet; city-view rooms are higher floors and face the urban sprawl
Why It Matters
You check in inside a 170-year-old chapel. The cloister houses the main restaurant. The outdoor lap pool sits in what was the nuns' enclosure. And the whole building was designed by the architect of one of France's most recognizable basilicas. The restaurant earned the Maître Restaurateur title in 2025 and joined the Toques Blanches Lyonnaises in January 2026 — serious credentials in France's gastronomic capital.
A 19th-century convent — built in 1854 by Pierre-Marie Bossan, the same architect behind the Fourvière Basilica — converted into a 4-star boutique hotel perched above Lyon's old town. The chapel now serves as the reception, complete with its original stained glass and gilded ornamentation. Each of the 75 rooms is named for a different figure from Lyon's history, from Roman founder Lucius Munatius Plancus to the Lumière Brothers.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A peaceful cloister garden with an aromatic plant trail used by the hotel's chefs and pastry chefs. Open to guests for strolls, relaxation on the terrace, and a quiet escape from the city below.
A genuine boules court in the Jardin des Canuts garden. Free to use for guests. A true Lyon ritual — especially satisfying after a session in the steam room.
Dedicated event and seminar space with a range of rooms, all equipped with Wi-Fi and projection screens. Adjacent to the hotel, just below the Fourvière Basilica.
Franco-Argentinian artist Pablo Reinoso created an in-situ sculpture trail specifically for the hotel, running from the entrance through the cloister. Works include 'Fôret Fourvière,' 'Fourvière Bench,' and 'Stopping-sur-Nuage.' Each piece is in dialogue with the convent's architecture.
