Why It Matters
The only 5-star luxury hotel in Bologna, and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World since 1990. It holds actual 16th-century Carracci school frescoes and visible Roman-era paving in the cellar. The I Carracci restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide 2025. Its roster of historic guests reads like a mid-century Hollywood call sheet.
Bologna's oldest and only 5-star hotel, open since 1912 in an 18th-century palazzo originally built for a cardinal who became Pope. The building is a genuine museum: a 16th-century Carracci fresco cycle in the Camerino d'Europa on the main floor, and a 10-meter stretch of ancient Roman road (dated 189 BC) excavated in the basement. Rooms are dressed in Venetian antiques, silk walls, and Murano glass; suites bear the names of famous Italians. Fellini, Sinatra, and Clark Gable all stayed here. The I Carracci restaurant, with its frescoed vaulted ceiling, remains one of the most serious dining rooms in Emilia-Romagna.
