Why It Matters
The first hotel in Japan where guests can check in without leaving their bicycles. Opened in 2014 inside a renovated 1943 maritime warehouse designed by Hiroshima's Suppose Design Office as part of a prefecture-backed effort to turn Onomichi from a day-trip destination into a genuine overnight stop. The cycling infrastructure is genuinely comprehensive: bike hangers in every room, on-site Giant Store with professional maintenance, luggage forwarding to your next stop on the Shimanami Kaido.
Hotel Cycle sits inside ONOMICHI U2, a 2,000-square-meter former shipping warehouse from 1943 that Suppose Design Office converted into what they call 'a small town within a city.' The cycling theme is total and completely unironic: you can check in without ever dismounting your bike — the first hotel in Japan to offer that. All 28 rooms have bike hangers, the Giant Store downstairs rents quality road and cross bikes, and you're a short ride from the Shimanami Kaido, the 60km island-hopping route that's reason enough to come to Onomichi. The warehouse bones give the place real character: double-height ceilings, industrial materials warmed with local wood, mortar, and steel, and Bingo denim pajamas waiting on the bed.

Public-area repair space within the hotel for guests to maintain their own bikes. Rental tools available. Good for quick pre-ride checks or fixing mechanical issues before heading out on the Shimanami.
Hotel Cycle offers its own bicycle rental service exclusively for guests. Choose between cross bikes for casual riding or road bikes for a more serious effort. Bikes are adjusted individually for each guest. Separate from the Giant Store rental, which is open to the public.
The hotel offers both incoming and outgoing bicycle shipping. Send your bike from home and have it waiting on arrival, or ship it onward to Imabari (or back home) so you don't have to carry it on the train. A practical essential for Shimanami through-riders.
A full professional cycle shop inside the ONOMICHI U2 complex. Stocks the Giant and Liv ranges, sells gear, and offers professional bike fitting and maintenance. Rental bikes available here too (open to public). Closed on Tuesdays.
Hotel Cycle sits at the Honshu starting point of the Shimanami Kaido — Japan's most famous cycling route, connecting Onomichi to Imabari (Shikoku) across six islands and six bridges over 60km of Seto Inland Sea scenery. The hotel provides bike hangers in every room, a luggage forwarding service to Imabari or your next stop, and staff who know the route well. Doable as a full day or spread over two.
