Indigo Nagasaki Glover Street
Heritage boutique with serious cultural storytelling. Think calico-print tiles, Dejima-inspired lobby rugs, Arita-ware lamp bases, and folding screens depicting Nagasaki Bay. It's theatrical without being kitsch.
Book the Twilight Cruise package for a private sunset cruise to Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) — it starts from ¥600,000/night but includes suite accommodation, dinner, champagne and Japanese caviar onboard. Available for one group per day.
Why It Matters
The restaurant, Cathedréclat, is a literal converted chapel with 10-metre ceilings and intact stained glass — one of the most dramatic dining rooms in Kyushu. The building itself is a government-designated traditional structure within a National Important Preservation District, sitting directly adjacent to Glover Garden (World Heritage Site) and Oura Cathedral (national treasure). Only 66 rooms.
Opened December 13, 2024, this is the first Hotel Indigo in Kyushu and the fifth in Japan. The hotel occupies a 100-plus-year-old Romanesque redbrick building in Nagasaki's Minami-Yamate historic district, preserving the original white arched windows, stained-glass panels, and rib-vaulted ceilings of its predecessor. The whole property is organized around Nagasaki's 'Wa-Ka-Ran' philosophy — the centuries-old intermingling of Japanese (Wa), Chinese (Ka), and Dutch/Western (Ran) cultures — woven into every room, corridor, and dish.
