Hotel âme
Minimalist and meditative. Think wabi-sabi without the affectation — warm beige, grey and white tones, worn wood, Art Nouveau plasterwork ceilings, and cast iron balusters on a monumental staircase. It's calm here. Intentionally so.
The café is exclusively for hotel guests until 9AM — a rare quiet breakfast window before the public arrives.
Why It Matters
A Michelin Guide-selected independent hotel where the co-founder is also the ceramicist who makes the tableware, the building is a protected monument with original fireplaces and paneling on every floor, and the café doubles as a genuine specialty coffee destination open to the public. No elevator, no pool, no spa — just considered design and very good beds.
Hotel âme is a 14-room boutique hotel inside a monumental neoclassical building from 1867. Co-founders Angel Cheung-Kwok and Manfung Cheung spent four years renovating the space before opening in September 2021, and the result is something genuinely hard to categorise: not Dutch, not old-fashioned, but a quiet blend of Japanese and Scandinavian sensibilities, with natural materials, Farrow & Ball bone-colored walls, and bespoke oak furniture throughout. Downstairs, a café and concept store operates independently of the rooms — open to anyone who wants a Shokunin specialty coffee served on Angel's own handmade ceramics.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Browse and buy hand-thrown ceramics made by co-founder Angel Cheung-Kwok, Japanese lifestyle products, curated design books, and items used throughout the hotel. Most things you admire in the rooms are available to purchase.
The hotel's 'Way of Life' page is a hand-picked guide to nearby spots the founders actually visit and endorse — restaurants like Héroine and Bertmans, design shops like Pantoufle and Objet Trouvé, coffee bars like Harvest Coffee Brewers, and cultural institutions like Kunsthal and Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen.
The hotel hosts periodic events — details listed on their website's Events page. Nature of events varies; check hotelame.com/events/ for current programme.
The café serves rotating single-origin coffees from Shokunin, Rotterdam's specialty roaster. Various brew methods available. Japanese teas (Hojicha, Matcha) also offered. An excellent way to get into the rhythm of the hotel and neighbourhood.
