Illa Experience Hotel
Intimate colonial mansion hotel with a strong cultural identity. Artsy and warm rather than flashy, with handcrafted furnishings sourced from local churches, handwoven linens, and floral-scented bedding. Think private home of a well-traveled quiteño family, not a generic luxury chain.
Request an upper-floor room facing El Panecillo — the statue lights up at night and the views are genuinely worth it
Why It Matters
Featured in TIME Magazine's World's Greatest Places and the New York Times. Multi-year Gold Travvy Award winner for Best Luxury Hotel in South America (2021–2025). Only full spa in Quito's old town. Every room stay comes with complimentary airport transfer, daily cultural experiences, and à la carte breakfast at INES restaurant — an unusually inclusive package for the price point.
A restored 17th-century colonial mansion in Quito's quiet San Marcos neighborhood, Illa packs just 10 rooms across three gallery floors, each themed to a different era of the city's history — Colonial, Republican, and Contemporary. The name comes from the Quechua word for 'Sacred Light,' and the hotel takes that seriously: daily artisan workshops, curated neighborhood walks, and an evening fire pit overlooking El Panecillo are standard issue, not add-ons. This is the only property in Quito's old town with a full spa, and it holds Gold recognition from the LATA Responsible Tourism Awards.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Every day, the hotel organizes a different activity connecting guests with local artisans and Ecuadorian traditions. Past experiences have included watercolor painting in a neighborhood art studio, Panama hat weaving demonstrations, traditional dessert making (helado de paila — ice cream spun in a copper bowl), chocolate making, Ecuadorian biscuit baking, lavender tea ceremonies, rose water and ice facial treatments, and dance lessons. These are the core of the 'Illa Method' and are included complimentarily with every room.
Guests can participate in ecotours organized by the hotel. Specific itineraries are arranged upon request.
An evening fire pit is lit on the rooftop/terrace area overlooking the Panecillo hill and the Virgin of Quito statue. A genuinely good way to end the day. No reservation needed — just head upstairs after dinner.
The hotel's fitness studio offers group fitness classes for guests.
A private guided tour of the San Marcos neighborhood, one of Quito's most traditional residential barrios. Home to artisans, artists, and direct descendants of Quito's original inhabitants. Available as part of special occasion packages and on request.
The hotel houses a private art gallery accessible to guests. Works reflect Ecuadorian art and the cultural identity of the San Marcos neighborhood.
The hotel has an attached winery and tasting room. Local wine tastings and wine release events are held on-site. The sommelier at INES restaurant focuses on local and South American bottles.
