Le Royal (Lyon)
Grand Parisian-style residence with Lyonnais soul. Think white walls with pops of red or blue, tactile fabrics, brass accents. Formal but not stiff — staff treat you like a member of the household.
The Rotunda Junior Suite sits inside the actual onion dome — the most architecturally interesting room in the hotel and worth upgrading for
Why It Matters
Opened in 1912, designed by architect Prosper Perrin with a Haussmannian facade plus rotunda and onion dome. Interior design by renowned Pierre-Yves Rochon. One of the first hotels to join the MGallery Collection. The only hotel in Lyon with a Paul Bocuse Institute culinary school on-site — you can eat dinner cooked by Institut students and then take a class the next morning.
Le Royal has been Lyon's grande dame since 1912. The six-story Haussmannian building with its Renaissance-style rotunda and onion dome owns its corner of Place Bellecour with real authority. Inside, Pierre-Yves Rochon's interiors dress 72 rooms in Toile de Jouy wallpapers, Ligne Roset furniture and Nouailhac armchairs — classic French elegance with enough contemporary edge to avoid feeling stuffy. The big draw beyond the location is the on-site Paul Bocuse Institute restaurant and cooking school, making it genuinely unusual among luxury city hotels.
