01 Hotel
Contemporary heritage. Dark timber, warm tones, leather lounges built for napping. The vibe is sophisticated but relaxed — serious design without any stuffiness. The circular open fireplace in The Lounge is the social heart of the ground floor.
Ask for a Waterfront Room on the upper floors for uninterrupted harbour views over the fishing boats and toward Mount Wellington
Why It Matters
Australia's only dedicated storytelling hotel. Every room is tied to a real historical Tasmanian figure. The storytelling tours alone — five of them, complimentary — regularly get called the highlight of an entire Tasmanian trip. Evolve Spirits Bar holds Australia's Hotel Bar of the Year twice over.
MACq 01 is Australia's first and only dedicated storytelling hotel, sitting right on Macquarie Wharf in a cedar-clad building purpose-built in 2017. All 114 rooms are named after real Tasmanian characters — convicts, whalers, activists, inventors — each with its own artwork by local artist Troy Ruffels on the bedhead and historical artifacts framed near the door. It's a proper concept, not just a gimmick: the hotel employs full-time professional storytellers who run five different tours, free for guests.

A whisky tasting with an Overeem Distillery expert at Evolve Spirits Bar. Runs Tuesday 5:30pm, Thursday 5:30pm, and Friday 4:30pm. Guests learn about Tasmania's whisky-making process and taste some of the distillery's finest releases. Overeem is one of Australia's most respected luxury whiskies.
An hour-long immersive gin tasting led by a MACq 01 storyteller. Guests sip a flight of five exclusive MACq 01 gins — each named after one of the hotel's five Tasmanian character traits (Hearty & Resilient, Curious & Creative, Grounded Yet Exceptional, Fighting Believers, Colourful & Quirky) — made in partnership with McHenry Distillery.
Private, customised day trips using pedal-assisted electric mountain bikes on Maria Island National Park and Bangor on Tasmania's east coast. Options include an On Country Adventure with Tasmanian Aboriginal culture guide Sheldon Thomas, a summer snorkel/ride, and a fly/ride scenic combination with Above & Beyond seaplanes.
One of five storytelling tours offered complimentary to in-house guests. Walks from Hunter Street to Salamanca Place with a master storyteller, using retro viewfinders that overlay historical photos of the same streets from 150 years ago. Frequently cited as a highlight of the entire Tasmania trip.
A behind-the-scenes tour of the old Hunter Street buildings — exploring haunts and hidden spaces of the former jam factory. One of five complimentary storytelling tours for guests.
A bespoke gallery showcasing contemporary Tasmanian art, located within the MAC01 Complex. Free to visit.
A 5 or 7-day bespoke expedition cruise through southwest Tasmania's world-heritage wilderness to Port Davey, Bathurst Harbour and beyond. Small group tours aboard a boutique floating hotel with an onboard chef. Arranged through the hotel.

Guided tour covering the hotel's collection of 400+ artworks including paintings by John Glover and works from the John Glover Art Prize and Henry Jones Art Prize. Run by MACq 01's storytellers.
