Why It Matters
One of the first Mama Shelters outside major world capitals — founded by the Trigano family (of Club Med fame) and Philippe Starck, and now part of Ennismore/Accor. The concept works especially well in Lyon, a city that was notably underserved for design-forward budget hotels.
Philippe Starck's handwriting is all over this one — chalkboard ceilings, communal tables, an open kitchen, and design details that wink at Lyon specifically (sofas upholstered with lions, elevator text about local slang). The formula is democratic by design: great beds, free movies, a proper bar, and prices that don't require a company card. It sits at the crossroads of three Lyon neighborhoods — Gerland, the Lumières university district, and Jean Macé — which gives it a genuinely local feel rather than a hotel-district vibe.

Darts and a table football (babyfoot) table in the common area. Classic Mama Shelter touches that keep things social and unpretentious.
The DJ rocks the decks in the restaurant and bar Thursday through Sunday evenings. No cover charge — just show up, eat, drink, and stay as long as the music plays.
Every Sunday features live music in the restaurant. Artists play across a range of genres. The Super Sunday menu (€19) pairs well — half farm chicken, profiteroles with Madagascar vanilla and Valrhona chocolate.
Multiple meeting rooms of various sizes with Bose sound systems, LED screens, and tech set-ups for presentations. The hotel has six unique spaces and can accommodate up to around 109 people. Private privatization for events also available.
Saturday and Sunday brunch from 12:00 to 15:30. Full buffet including continental, English breakfast, salad bar, cheese and charcuterie, and 5-6 rotating hot dishes. Adult €42, child (under 11) €21. Open to hotel guests and walk-ins.
