Five suites inside a late-1800s Downtown Cairo building called La Viennoise, each designed around a fictional character from the neighbourhood's cosmopolitan past. Interior designer Malak Orfy kept the high ceilings and original bones intact, layering in vintage collectibles and contemporary art by Kairo Lumumba. Inspired by Nabil, a young man who abandoned law school to pursue architecture in Downtown Cairo. A modest single room with a modern bathroom featuring sleek tiles that echo traditional Egyptian motifs. The design reflects his creative eye — clean lines, architectural details, and a narrative of personal reinvention.
Madame Marika — The Elegant Hostess
The standout suite, modelled on a 65-year-old Greek woman who ran a pension in Downtown Cairo. Features a balcony with lush potted plants and an elegant iron railing overlooking the neighbourhood. The bathroom is the room's centrepiece — a soaking tub decorated with flowers and candles, with soft hues and essential oil scents.
Rochdi Pasha — The Regal Gentleman
Inspired by a retired military man in his late 50s who found solace in Om Kalthoum's music. The room is adorned with royal pictures and has a masculine, stately character. The bathroom features marble accents and soft lighting. A balcony with elegant iron railings and potted plants overlooks the city.
Souad — The Aspiring Artist
Souad pursued a singing career downtown, inspired by Egyptian legends Tahya Kareoka and Souad Hossny. The suite features a balcony adorned with fairy lights and vibrant plants, complete with a vintage record player. The pastel-tiled bathroom is a standout — lavender-infused, with a soaking bathtub set up with bath bombs and rose petals.
