Rotterdam
Industrial-minimalist architecture hotel. Raw materials — concrete, steel, glass — paired with designer furniture (think Montis Lazy Bastard chairs). Urban, forward-looking, design-forward but not fussy. Popular with creative professionals, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone who wants a city skyline as their screensaver.
The standard nhow Room technically has a view but it faces another high-rise — worth paying up for the Premium Sunrise or Premium Skyline room category for genuine panoramas
Why It Matters
Designed by Rem Koolhaas/OMA — the only hotel in the world where Koolhaas oversaw both the building's exterior and its interior. Located in De Rotterdam, a 42-story mixed-use tower considered one of the most significant pieces of contemporary architecture in Europe. Won the Best Hotel Design Award in 2014. The Erasmus Bridge view from upper floors is arguably the best urban view in the Netherlands.
nhow Rotterdam sits inside De Rotterdam, Rem Koolhaas/OMA's iconic stacked skyscraper on the Wilhelminapier waterfront. It's the first hotel project where Koolhaas handled both exterior and interior design, and the result is exactly what you'd expect: concrete, steel, glass, and a minimalist sensibility that lets the views do the talking. All 274 rooms face outward, and the 7th-floor Gastrobar ELVY with its rooftop terrace is the kind of spot that pulls in locals and guests alike. This is a 4-star hotel that punches well above its category on architecture and location alone.
