Gallery Hotel
Heritage boutique with contemporary fit-out. Art-forward interiors, lobby fireplace, Library Bar with eclectic books. Quiet and intimate — no sprawling atrium lobby energy.
Request a room with the deep bathtub — the Standard Queen Bath or Superior King Bath categories are worth the upgrade and aren't massively more expensive.
Why It Matters
Canberra's first and best contemporary boutique hotel, set in the only purpose-built 1920s heritage building in the city's urban arts precinct. The property opened in 1927 specifically to accommodate guests arriving for the first Parliament House opening, giving it a backstory no other hotel in the ACT can claim. Holds a Sustainable Tourism Certification from Ecotourism Australia.
Peppers Gallery Hotel sits inside a restored 1927 heritage building in Canberra's NewActon precinct — the place was originally built to house VIP guests for the grand opening of Parliament House and has been hosting politicians, diplomats, and travellers ever since. The '20s-vintage structure got a thorough contemporary makeover, and the result is genuinely charming: ornate patterned ceilings overhead, modernist furnishings at eye level, and a sculpture garden that spills into the foyer. Eighty rooms across a mix of compact queens and spacious king suites, all with MicroCloud bedding, opening sash windows, and Bang & Olufsen entertainment. No pool, but the location in the walkable NewActon arts-and-dining precinct more than compensates. Note: the hotel is currently mid-renovation (as of early 2026), so expect some disruption.
