Pousada Picinguaba
Slow, intentional, eco-minded. Think unpretentious colonial architecture, Brazilian folk art on the walls, no TV, no phone in rooms — just hammocks on balconies, sea breeze, and a pool deck with one of the best views on Brazil's Costa Verde. Rooms are small but well considered. Staff are from the village itself. The whole thing feels like staying at a well-traveled friend's beach house, not a hotel.
Ask staff to arrange a visit to the local quilombo community in the rainforest — a guided walk with a resident who explains the forest's ecology and history. It's not on the website but they organize it.
Why It Matters
The only large structure built within Serra do Mar State Park — an extraordinary privilege. Listed in HIP HOTELS as one of the 80 most extraordinary hotels in the world. Featured on the National Geographic Stay List 2011. The village of Picinguaba is a UNESCO-recognized heritage site, and the pousada's restaurant is the region's best slow-food table, open to the public. Guests swim with turtles, kayak mangroves, and fish with local fishermen who have worked this bay for generations.
Pousada Picinguaba sits inside Serra do Mar State Park — a legal quirk of history, built in the late 1970s before the park existed, making it the only structure of its scale within the park's boundaries. It's a 10-room whitewashed colonial property on a quiet bay in the tiny fishing village of Picinguaba, about 3.5 hours from both Rio and São Paulo and 30 minutes from Paraty. The road ends at the beach; the last 250 meters to the hotel is on foot.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Three guided cultural tours available: the historic fishing village of Picinguaba itself, the colonial town of Paraty (30 minutes away), and the Trilha de Ouro (Gold Trail) through the forest. Paraty features 17th and 18th century architecture, craft shops, and local restaurants.
Guided trails through essentially untouched Atlantic Forest. Routes lead to secret beaches (only accessible on foot), spectacular waterfalls, and birdwatching spots. Guides are local and passionate about the ecosystem. The forest is one of the world's most biodiverse.
Stand-up paddleboards and kayaks are available for exploring the bay, the deserted Praia da Fazenda, and the mangrove. Surfing can also be arranged. Guests report swimming with sea turtles directly from the beach.
Go out on a traditional colorful fishing boat with a local fisherman from the village. The catch can be cooked for dinner afterward. Works well for families with children. Picinguaba's artisanal fishing traditions are part of its UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage.
The pousada's private schooner takes guests to secluded beaches and islands not reachable by road. Typically a 6-hour trip. Included in full property rental packages; available as extra for individual room guests. One of the most consistently praised experiences at the property.
A boat trip arranged specifically to watch the sunset from one of several secluded beaches in the area. Best done away from the main beach for full isolation and color.
A guided visit to a local quilombo — a rainforest community originally founded by freed or escaped enslaved people. Includes a forest walk with a resident guide explaining the area's ecology and history. Not widely advertised; ask staff to arrange.
Paddle through the mangrove in a traditional handmade caiçara canoe — the same colorful wooden boats used by local fishermen for generations. The mangrove is the natural filter between fresh and salt water, home to unique vegetation and wildlife.
