Why It Matters
A converted 1930s cinema with personality baked into every corner — including lifts that crack jokes. Pascale Bar & Grill holds a Good Food Guide hat. Yamagen, the newest addition, runs Melbourne's largest rare Japanese whisky collection (120+). Tanto is an actual working knife-sharpening shop inside the hotel. The rooftop bar is one of the city's most-coveted after-work perches.
QT Melbourne takes over a 1930s cinema on Russell Street and makes absolutely no attempt to hide it. The lobby is a riot of neon sculptures, video screens, a wall of 6,000 books, and staff who dress like they wandered off a fashion shoot. All 188 rooms are, somewhat unexpectedly, serene — concrete, slate, timber, leather — and quieter than a city-centre hotel has any right to be. Corner rooms put a freestanding bathtub right against floor-to-ceiling windows, which is as good as it sounds. The lifts deliver sassy one-liners as you ride up, which pretty much tells you everything you need to know about this place.

Same industrial-chic look as the QT King but pushed up to the higher floors (levels 6–8), so the city views are properly worth it. Faces either Donaldson Lane or Portland Lane. The bathroom upgrades to Kevin Murphy amenities and there's a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer — a nice touch that most hotels overlook.

Top of the house, literally. Perched on level 11 facing Russell Street, these high-ceilinged rooms have parquet floors, original sculptures, and industrial hanging lamps. Twin sinks and a bathtub with a rainfall shower in the ensuite. At 32sqm it's actually two square metres larger than the Deluxe King — the extra height does a lot of the work in making it feel generous.
