Mate Bruno
Bold, theatrical, design-forward boutique hotel with an irreverent color-heavy interior. Sociable atmosphere with a strong local identity — this doesn't feel like a chain.

Why It Matters
Teresa Sapey-designed interior is one of the most photographed hotel interiors in Rotterdam. Michelin Guide selection. The hotel's narrative-driven concept — every color, material, and motif traces back to the building's spice warehouse heritage — is unusually coherent for a chain property. Ranked #4 of 65 Rotterdam hotels on TripAdvisor.
Room Mate Bruno is a 217-room design hotel in the Pakhuismeesteren, a 4-story former Dutch East India Company tea warehouse in Rotterdam's Kop van Zuid district. Completed in 2018 and designed by Madrid-based Teresa Sapey + Partners, the interiors are built around a sailor character named Bruno, with color palettes drawn from spices and Flemish paintings — saffron yellows, cinnamon oranges, and deep sea blues. Nautical and astronomical motifs run throughout, and it sits directly opposite Rem Koolhaas's De Rotterdam. The same building houses the Foodhallen, Rotterdam's sprawling food hall, which is a bonus at any hour.
