Why It Matters
Michelin Key Hotel (2024). One of the rare new ryokan built by deliberately recycling the fittings of a beloved predecessor — not just aesthetically but philosophically, preserving the tradition of the Onomichi 'saen' (tea garden for merchant hospitality). The detached villa layout around a sea-view garden is hard to find at this quality level in western Japan.
A small luxury ryokan that opened in 2023 on the exact grounds of the 1943 Nishiyama Bekkan tea garden, which once hosted writers, artists, and members of the imperial family. The rebuild was meticulous: wood from original alcoves became room keys, old roof tiles line the entrance, and hanging scrolls and tea ceremony utensils from the former inn are still in use. Eleven rooms — eight in six detached villas arranged around a central garden, plus three in the main building — look out over the Seto Inland Sea. It earned a Michelin Key designation in 2024.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A selection of board games is available for guests — a deliberate choice given that there are no TVs in any of the rooms. The property actively encourages guests to slow down and be present with companions.
Locally made Nagi-brand bicycles available free for guests to explore Onomichi's narrow backstreets, temple paths, and harbor area. The Nagi brand is produced in Onomichi itself, so riding one here feels intentional rather than incidental. Available year-round, 6am–11pm, up to 6 hours per day.
A leisurely cruise on a small retro fishing boat along the Onomichi Channel, which runs like a river between the mainland and Mukaishima Island. Includes Neconotepan biscotti as a souvenir. Fishing for sea bream is available as an optional add-on — the ryokan provides all gear. Available year-round, 7am–5pm. Minimum 2 guests.
A curated library inspired by Onomichi's literary legacy — the town was beloved by writers and poets throughout the 20th century. Books cover folk art, crafts, and local culture. Guests can borrow any title and take it back to their room to read. Open 15:00–21:00 and 7:00–11:00.
