Shisui, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Nara
Heritage urban resort — Taisho-era wooden structure meets precise modern Japanese design. Intimate and quiet, not flashy. Craft details everywhere: woven textures, soft-grain woods, arched ceilings that nod to Nara's artisanal traditions. Feels more like a serious cultural stay than a five-star hotel flex.
Book a room with an open-air onsen (rotenboro) rather than the indoor version — the garden sounds and cedar scents at night are the point
Why It Matters
Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates inside the former Nara Prefectural Governor's residence (1922). The hotel grounds were once part of Kofuku-ji temple's estate. About half the rooms have private onsen baths fed by actual volcanic hot springs. No other internationally branded luxury hotel sits this close to Nara's World Heritage core.
Shisui opened in late 2023 as Nara's first internationally branded luxury hotel — and it earns the title. The main building is a renovated 1922 Governor's residence, designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, whose classical Japanese roofed gate still serves as the hotel's entrance. Only 43 rooms, floor-to-ceiling garden views, a private hot-spring spa, and UNESCO World Heritage sites within literal walking distance. The history goes deeper than most: the room where Emperor Showa signed the San Francisco Peace Treaty in 1951 is preserved on the grounds.
