Setoda
Minimalist community hub. Clean lines, wood furniture, Ultrasuede-wrapped walls, and big sea-facing windows. Designed by Studio Dig, the spaces feel deliberate but not precious. More slow-travel inn than hotel.
Book through the official website (soilis.co/setoda/) — every plan includes a complimentary Yubune bath ticket; walk-in doesn't
Why It Matters
Michelin Key Selected property that opened in April 2021 as a local revitalization project. The combination of a Meiji storehouse, a wood-fired restaurant, Japan's first Overview Coffee roastery, a coworking space, a library shop, and a food-focused select shop — all on one short stretch of a fishing town shopping street — makes it genuinely unlike anything else on the Shimanami Kaido.
SOIL Setoda sits right on the waterfront of Setoda's compact port town on Ikuchijima island, along the Shimanami Kaido cycling route. A 140-year-old Meiji-era salt warehouse now houses a specialty coffee roastery and café; next door, the MINATOYA restaurant cooks local seafood and vegetables over a wood fire with views of the calm Seto Inland Sea. Hotel rooms spread across several buildings on and around the old Shiomachi shopping street — some above the restaurant, others a short stroll into the arcade — so you're genuinely sleeping in the middle of town life rather than apart from it.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Rent a mountain bike or e-bike from the hotel and head out on the Shimanami Kaido. No advance reservation needed but availability is limited, so calling ahead helps. The official Shimanami Kaido cycle rental/return point is an 8-minute walk away at the Setoda Tourist Info office.
Guided cycling tour from Setoda to the Oyamazumi Shrine on Omishima — one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines dedicated to mountain and sea gods. Route passes through lemon-growing valleys.
Private guided ride departing SOIL Setoda heading toward Shimanami Park on Omishima via the famous Tatara Bridge — the world's longest cable-stayed bridge. Passes through the lemon valleys en route.
Hands-on workshop at the Overview Coffee Setoda Roastery in the Kura storehouse. Learn about regenerative agriculture, roasting, and brew technique from the team behind Japan's first Overview outpost.
Autumn activity combining a cycle to Takane Island with a mikan (mandarin) picking session amid citrus and lemon groves. Views of Tatara Bridge and Omishima on the way.
Board a local fisherman's boat for 2–5 hours of fishing in spots the crew has worked for years. Sea views of the island chain are as good as anything on the route.
An evening bonfire on the Seto Inland Sea shore. Simple, unhurried, and surprisingly rare — watching the sea change color as the fire crackles.
One departure per day. The boat passes under bridges, past lemon-covered hillsides, circles the ruins of the Murakami pirate castle on Noshima island, and lingers at spots where the whirlpool currents are visible.
Stand-up paddleboarding on the Seto Inland Sea timed around sunset. The calm, sheltered waters make it accessible to beginners. Float toward the evening light or just drift and watch.
Introductory SUP session on the Seto Inland Sea with an instructor. The deceptively strong tidal currents here give the experience some edge — instructors teach you how to read the water.
Seasonal (November to April) citrus picking experience in the lemon groves Setoda is famous for. The island's combination of sunshine and Seto Inland Sea air produces fruit the rest of Japan tries to replicate.
A 7-minute walk up stone steps from SOIL brings you to Kojoji temple, where a resident monk leads a guided zazen (sitting meditation) session. Soto Zen school — the practice is tied back directly to the Buddha's awakening.
Half-day excursion to neighboring Omishima Island, centered on Oyamazumi Shrine and a local winery brewery tour. The shrine holds one of Japan's most important collections of ancient armor and swords.
Gentle walking tour of Setoda starting from the seaside lantern tower (Jōyatō), over the yellow Takane Bridge, and up to a three-story pagoda. Follows the sketching routes of Setoda-born painter Ikuo Hirayama.
