Why It Matters

Genuinely the first hotel in Australia purpose-built around contemporary art, set in heritage-listed buildings dating to 1823 on Hobart's working waterfront. The onsite Landscape Restaurant & Grill earned a Chef Hat from the Australian Good Food Guide in 2022. The art collection rotates, all pieces are for sale, and the building itself is as interesting as the artwork inside it.

Australia's first dedicated art hotel, The Henry Jones opened in 2004 inside a cluster of restored 1820s sandstone warehouses and the former IXL Jam Factory right on Hobart's harbour. The building's bones are very much on show — rough-hewn timber beams, hand-cut stone walls — but the corridors and all 56 rooms are lined with over 400 original works by Tasmanian artists, every piece available for purchase. Rooms were fully refurbished in 2018 and range from cosy standard quarters in the old jam factory complex to a suite that was literally Henry Jones' boardroom, complete with Blackwood panelling and an overflow harbour-view spa.
