Why It Matters
Named one of The World's 50 Best Hotels 2024 and recognised four consecutive years running in Condé Nast Readers' Choice Awards (Best Hotel in Australasia and 21st in the World in 2022). Australia's first Luxury Collection hotel, The Tasman sits squarely in Parliament Square, occupying three buildings from three very different eras: an 1847 Georgian sandstone hospital, a 1940s Art Deco government office block, and a sleek contemporary Pavilion added in the 2020s. The result is a 152-room property where no two rooms look alike and the corridors literally shift aesthetic as you walk from one wing to the next. Frette linens, locally sourced Grown Alchemist bath products, minibar Moo Brew beers and a house-exclusive Lark Distillery whisky set the tone — this is serious about being Tasmanian, not just gesturing at it.

Set in the 1940s Art Deco wing where the hotel's main entrance sits. Rich colour palettes, Blackheart Sassafras timber ceilings, and understated period luxury. Base rooms here are on the smaller side but well appointed. City views rather than harbour.

The flagship. A 108 sqm rooftop suite atop the Pavilion building, named for the Aurora Australis. The outdoor terrace with sandstone and glass firepit is the headline act — unobstructed harbour and Derwent views. The bedroom orients toward the courtyard for privacy, with glimpses of kunanyi/Mount Wellington. Freestanding soaking tub in a spacious marble bathroom. Breakfast for two, valet parking and stocked minibar included. Doubles as an intimate event venue.

Entry-level room in the 1847 Georgian sandstone Heritage building. Compact at around 30 sqm but genuinely distinctive — original windows, custom furnishings and restored period details set it apart from a standard hotel room. Some face the internal courtyard rather than the harbour, so views vary.

Separate living and sleeping space in the 1847 Heritage building. At 60–64 sqm, these are generously proportioned with exposed sandstone, restored fireplaces, original artwork, and custom furnishings. Every suite is slightly different, built into the existing footprint of the original building. The best choice for a distinctively Tasmanian stay.

A more spacious Heritage building suite with the same period bones as the full Heritage King Suite — packed into a studio layout rather than separate rooms. Occupying the curved ends of the upper Art Deco building, these rooms deliver all-encompassing harbour or city views through floor-to-ceiling curved feature windows. Native Sassafras timber ceilings and the Art Deco rich colour palette make these a step up from standard.

Contemporary Pavilion building room with floor-to-ceiling windows framing Hobart waterfront views. The most modern feel of any room in the hotel — light-filled, minimal, and decidedly 2020s. At 27 sqm, it's compact, but the views compensate.
