Why It Matters
Norway's only Design Hotel designation. A curated art collection featuring Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Richard Prince — displayed alongside pieces on loan from the adjacent Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art (designed by Renzo Piano, literally next door). Interactive in-room TVs offer 'art on demand.' The Thief was on the New York Times '46 destinations' list and Condé Nast Hot List in 2013, and has hosted Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Bill Gates, and Green Day. Fully cashless.
THE THIEF sits on Tjuvholmen — Thief Islet — a former haunt of smugglers and outcasts that is now one of Oslo's most desirable waterfront addresses. Built in 2013 and Norway's only designated Design Hotel, this 119-room boutique property is part gallery, part hideaway: curator Sune Nordgren (former director of Norway's National Museum of Art) handpicked an original artwork for every single room, and a Damien Hirst 'Spin' painting dominates the restaurant wall. Every room has a private balcony, the spa has a 12-metre indoor pool overlooking the fjord, and the rooftop bar on the 9th floor is exactly as good as it sounds.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The Renzo Piano–designed museum is literally next door. All hotel stays include complimentary tickets. The Thief holds a collaboration with the museum and displays works from its collection on the hotel's own walls.
Each room's interactive TV offers a curated selection of contemporary video art to stream — a world first when the hotel opened in 2013.
The hotel has a private bathing jetty directly on the Oslofjord, steps from the spa. Cold-water dips boost circulation and are a genuine Nordic ritual here — not a marketing gimmick. There's also a nearby beach.
Available on request — useful for navigating Oslo's boutiques and galleries in the Aker Brygge and Tjuvholmen district.
The 9th-floor rooftop with views over Oslo and the fjord. Open in summer with a bar, food, and occasional DJ sets. Special programming on Norwegian National Day (May 17).
On-site gym. Free and accessible 24 hours a day for hotel guests. Open during regular hours for spa members.
