March Tips
- •Avoid this month if northern lights are your priority - clouds increase significantly
- •Pack waterproof layers as wet snow becomes common
- •Hotel rates drop but some seasonal activities start closing
All Months
Northern Lights season runs from late September through March, with peak viewing from November to February when you get 18+ hours of darkness daily. December and January offer the best aurora activity but also the coldest temperatures - expect minus 15 to minus 25 Celsius.
Midnight sun season lasts from mid-May through July, with the sun never setting from May 17 to July 26. June offers the warmest weather (15-20 Celsius) and endless daylight for hiking and fishing. This is peak tourist season, so book accommodation early.
Here's what most guides won't tell you - March can be ideal. You still get Northern Lights potential with longer daylight hours for daytime activities. Snow conditions remain excellent for dog sledding and snowmobiling, but temperatures moderate to around minus 5 Celsius. Plus, tourist crowds thin out significantly after February.
