Amelia Island in May

Great time to visit

May delivers excellent weather and the island's biggest festival. The Shrimp Festival weekend is absolute chaos, but the rest of the month offers great conditions with manageable crowds.

Weather

May brings the last month of truly comfortable weather before summer's heat arrives. Days warm up to the low 80s with gentle breezes off the Atlantic. Humidity starts climbing but stays manageable, and rain remains light.

May Tips

  • The Shrimp Festival draws 200,000+ people — book everything months ahead
  • Beach parking fills up by 11am on festival weekend
  • Consider staying in Jacksonville and driving over for day trips

All Months

March through May delivers perfect beach weather without the summer crowds. Temperatures hover in the 70s and 80s, the water's warm enough for swimming, and hotel rates haven't hit peak season yet. October and November offer the same sweet spot on the back end — fewer families, lower prices, and that golden hour light photographers dream about. Summer brings heat, humidity, and families from across the Southeast. July and August see temperatures in the 90s with afternoon thunderstorms that clear as quickly as they arrive. But the trade-off is everything's open and the island has serious energy. Winter can surprise you — some December days hit 75 degrees, perfect for walking the beach in a sweatshirt. Just know that restaurants and shops keep shorter hours, and some close entirely in January.
